BioOnce upon a time and in two different places, there was a boy named Benjamin Fenwick.
This boy Benjamin Fenwick got into a terrible car accident when he was 7 years old. He and his mum were driving to the store, got plowed into by a lorrie as it raced through an intersection.
In one place, his mum died.
In another place, in this place, she didn't. They both got banged up something fierce, but Rebecca Fenwick lived that day when she could have died.
Growing up with a mother instead of alone with survivor's guilt changes a person. Not that Benjy knows it, mind you. He is not the sort that can see through the film separating one place from another. If he could see through that film, see himself, he would notice some differences.
It maybe would not have been so apparent on the surface, for they were both Benjy Fenwick. And that means, intrinsically, to be the sort of boy that reads much too much and forgets to eat sometimes when he studies. He would have seen the same floppy hair and odd jackets and dark eyes on each.
But this Benjy, he's not so afraid of sleeping. Still a night owl, mind you, but without that ocassionally debilitating insomnia. Doesn't exactly have the same nightmares to avoid. If you sat there and compared them, you'd see that this boy smiles a bit more often.
Still remembers the sound of metal screaming and the bright white flash of pain, but he also can't recall what his mother sounded like as she was dying. Having your mother around to poke at you when you're too solemn helps you remember to laugh.
He's lighter all around, really. Still got a curiosity for Dark things, but just a curiosity. That dark, fierce part of him might be there still, might be intrinsic, but he's never seen it. This is a Benjy Fenwick who has not spent the last 10 years fighting and quietly punishing himself.
This is the sort of boy that knows all the words to 'The Sound of Music' thanks to his mother and sister. He still won't sing them, at least not while sober, but he knows them.
Then again, the other Benjy Fenwick might know them too. But the difference is, he would never EVER admit it.
